How To Get What You Want Using Focus

There was an interesting motivational talk on the subject of focus by a former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jimmy Johnson to his players before the 1993 Super Bowl.

“I told them that if I laid a two-by-four across the room, everybody would walk across it and not fall, because our focus would be that we were going to walk that two-by-four. But if I put that same two-by-four 10 stories high between two buildings only a few would make it, because the focus would be on not falling. Focus is everything; the team that is more focused today is the team that will win the game.”

The Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl 52-17

You see what Jimmy Johnson knew was that his men were about to go out into a hostile environment, filled with media, the crowd and the possibility of losing. He knew that his men would be thinking of all these things and therefore focusing on them.

What we focus on we manifest in our lives. If his men were to keep focusing on the negative of losing or listening to what the media or the crowd were saying, they would not have had the result they did.

Johnson was able to get his team to focus on what was important to them and ignore the environment around them.

Remember to focus on what you want and not what you don’t want. the two-by-four on the ground is easy for us to focus on the plank of wood. The two-by-four 10 stories high between two buildings is a little harder because we are more focused on what’s below that piece of wood, therefore we will follow where our brain goes… DOWN!

Creation Vs. Reaction

“You can create your own plans in advance so that your life will respond to you. If you can hold the thought that at all times your life is either a creation or reaction, you can continually remind yourself to be creating and planning. “Creation” and “Reaction” have the same letters in them exactly; they are anagrams (perhaps that’s why people slip out of one into the other.).” – Steve Sandler (100 ways to motivate yourself)

Make sure you know why you are getting up in the morning. CREATE your day before it starts. This way when you wake in the morning you have a reason to wake up, a reason to do whatever it is you need to do and you will notice that things start happening to manifest what you want to create, whether that be health, money, relationships etc.

On the other hand, when there is no creation and you are just reacting to what the day gives you, you won’t know where to look or go to achieve what you want out of that day.

Make sure you set your focus each and every day to create what you want!
